12. Poetry Close Reading Essay #1

  1. If I can be honest, I thought your actual analysis of the poem and its connection to "Crime and Punishment" in class was a lot more in-depth than this essay was. I mean, your essay excels at introducing quotes and very valid points about Yeats' poem, but the actual thesis is lacking in girth and the analysis is very basic in form. It's a great poem telling of humanity's impending doom, but this essay doesn't compare to what you presented in class. You tied it back towards the novel and Dostoevsky's own person there, and I was thoroughly impressed. You had one of the best, if not the best presentations in class, with only Shivank's presentation keeping my attention for the whole entire thing.

I know you have the potential and ability to craft this into as great as an analysis and close reading as the one you presented in class. Add some more to the analysis you already wrote, tie it back to Dostoevsky like you explained to us in class, and this would have equal footing to your acoustic retelling of this. You present great points of argumentation all through this close reading, but it seems like you just move on straight to the next idea without discussing it in detail. Add in the detail we all know you possess inside your mind, and this will be great.
